For nearly 200 years it served as a residence for the Mughals. However, main elements of Mughal architecture were adopted in the construction but fusion of Persian, Hindu and Timurid styles are also incorporated here. Red Fort also happens to be the venue of Indian Independence celebration when the prime minister of India hoists the national flag, during a grand ceremony.
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delhi, Qutub Minar is the second largest Minar of India. Its height is 72.5 meters, with a diameter of 14.3 meters. Verses of Quran are inscribed on the balconies of Qutub Minar, which is mainly built of red-sandstone and marbles. Many other ruins are scattered around this monument and all these collectively are called Qutub Complex. Some other notable structures are Tomb of Iltutmish, Alai Darwaza, Quwwat-Ul-Islam Mosque and Tomb of Imam Zamin.
Humayun's Tomb too is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built with finest precision and dedication. Humayun's wife Bega Begum commissioned this structure in 1569 or 1570 and after its construction it was the first garden-tomb in Indian subcontinent. The main architect of this tomb was a Persian, and hence a fusion of Mughal and Persian styles of architecture was incorporated. Other than Humayun's tomb, tomb of Hamida Begum, Dara Shikhoh, Bega Begum, Shah Jahan, Jahandar Shah and other regal personalities of the erstwhile era are located here.
Jama Masjid, the largest mosque of India is yet another mesmerizing creation of Shah Jahan, built between 1644 and 1658. During that time a cost of one million rupees were spent on the construction. It can accommodate up to 25000 people at once. Minarets, tombs and arched-gateways are few notable features of this mosque, which is decorated with calligraphy, jali work and other Mughal insignia. Chandni Chowk with its old-world charm pulls the crowd from different regions. Here you can shop for anything and everything at unbelievably cheap prices.
