Always in the limelight for its unique cultural traits, the Deccan of India highly talks about its past that has shaped its heritage. In the past centuries, the region was the favorite of many rulers and dynasties. Their inclination towards it led to the creation of a plethora of magnificent edifices that are now the region’s most prized processions. Keeping this in mind, we have carefully designed our 8 day ‘Jewels of the Deccan’ tour that promises to let you explore every of the region’s cultural traits. In order to make it a delightful experience for the guests, Deccan Odyssey has been kept in charge of the journey.

Itinerary

Day 1

Mumbai (Arrival)

Guests have to assemble at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai at around 03:30 in the evening. On arrival at the station, you all would be welcomed in traditional Indian style followed by a refreshing drink. Upon the completion of registration and other formalities, guests would be introduced to their luxury cabins in the Deccan Odyssey. With that, the train will leave for its first destination in the Deccan tour, Bijapur in Karnataka.

Day 2

Bijapur

Bijapur in the state of Karnataka is a historic city that was built in the 10th and 11th centuries. Being under the rule of many dynasties, the city has various architectural attractions to boast of. Mostly in the form of palaces, monuments and mosques, these attractions serve the curative minds of the historians the best.

As you would be enjoying your breakfast, Deccan Odyssey would be making its entry in Bijapur. Thus, as soon as you are done with the meal, embark on a sightseeing tour of the city. First in the schedule would be the visit to Gol Gumbaz.

Gol Gumbaz is the mausoleum of the very famous ruler or sultan of Bijapur, Mohammed Adil Shah and is the second largest tomb in the world. The mausoleum flaunts a wonderful architecture, inspired from the construction style of the Deccan. Once inside, make your way to the circular galleries that is known to create a great resonating effect, even a slight whisper can be heard like an echo.

Post this, head to one of the first mosques in India, the Jumma Masjid. Following this would be the visit to Malik-e-Maidan. It is one of a kind cannon that is known to be built in the medieval times. It is also said that on touching this cannon, wishes come true.

After this, guests would be heading towards another marvelous structure, the 17th century Mehtar Mahal. The structure is an ornamental gateway to a beautifully constructed mosque and garden. Last attraction for the day would be Ibrahim Rauza. Known as the tomb of another erstwhile ruler of Bijapur, Ibrahim Adil Shah, it is actually a squarte complex consisting of a tomb and a mosque. It has tall minarets that are believed to be inspired from that of the Taj Mahal in Agra.

By lunch time, you would be finished with every of these attractions. Thus, return to Deccan Odyssey for lunch as it starts its journey to Aihole & Pattadakal. Your evenings would be free so relax in your deluxe cabins.

Day 3

Aihole-Pattadakal

Deccan Odyssey would be reaching Aihole-Pattadikal at the wee hours of the morning. Thus, have an early breakfast leave for a sightseeing tour. The region is best known for its ancient temples and settlements. The temple complexes here are also one of the largest in the world. Prominent ones are the rock cut temples, which were built by the Chalukyan kings. These unique temples are designed in such a way their architecture looks different from one another and from the rest of Indian temples. Aihole has a total of 70 rock cut temples.

Post this visit, move towards Pattadakal, which is located on the banks of Malaprabha River. Here, you would be coming across structures inspired both from the North Indian (Nagara) and South Indian (Dravidian) forms of architecture.

After visits to these vivid ancient structures, return to Deccan Odyssey for lunch.

Post lunch, feel free to explore the rock cut caves and sculptured temples of Badami or visit the weaving village of Guledgud. The village is best known for souvenirs and handlooms of Ilkal and Khann. As you would be done with your optional visits, head back to Deccan Odyssey as it leaves for Hampi.

Day 4

Hampi

Deccan Odyssey would be chugging on its tracks to Hospet while you would be relishing your sumptuous breakfast. The region is best known for being the home of the UNESCO world heritage site-Hampi. Hampi has a great historical significance in the Deccan part of India. It has remarkable architectural wonders that are the creations of the past medieval rulers.

Post breakfast, embark on a sightseeing tour. You would be welcomed by the majestic Narsimha statue. Next in the schedule would be the giant monolithic statue of Lord Ganesha, which locals prefer to call Sasivekalu (Mustard seed) Ganesha. It is situated at the Hemkuta hills. Interesting fact about Hampi is, it has numerous statues and rocks surrounding it in every direction. Thus, these structures would be very common in your sightseeing tour.

The most significant part of your Hampi tour would be the visit to the sacred Virupaksah temple and Vittala temple. Both of these temples are located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. These two are UNESCO heritage sites and are amongst the finest examples of Deccan style of architecture.

After visiting these magnificent structures of Hampi, retreat to Deccan Odyssey for lunch. Post lunch, head to the visit of the historic Royal Center at Hampi. This once served as a fort of the great Vijaynagara kings. Then, you would be visiting the Queens Bath, the Mahanami Dibba, Queens Enclosure and the Hazara Rama temple, all situated within the Royal center.

Post this, call it a day and board the Deccan Odyssey as it moves to its next destination, Hyderabad.

Day 5

Hyderabad

Hyderabad is another city in the Deccan which was amongst the favorites of various dynasties in the past. In the present time, the city greatly boasts of its rich culture and heritage. Hyderabad is also highly famous for its biryanis and is a must visit for foodies.

Deccan Odyssey would be reaching this amazing city in the morning hours. Therefore, after having breakfast guests would be embarking on a sightseeing tour, starting with Golconda Fort. One of the major tourist attractions in the vicinity of Hyderabad, Golconda fort is a heritage structure that greatly emphasize on the architecture most opted by the city Nizams. After exploring this much celebrated fort, head back to Deccan Odyssey for Lunch. You have the option to head on to the shopping tour of Hyderabad, or rest in the comforts of the luxury train. If you go with the first option, then it would be your chance to shop for locally made items like lac bangles, pearls and Ittars (oil based fragrances). Do not forget to savor the most popular dish of Hyderabad, 'Biryani' as you stroll through the markets of the city.

Post this, you would be visiting Falaknuma Palace, another popular tourist attraction in the city. This beautiful palace was built by the prime minister of Hyderabad, Nawab Vikar-ul-Umra. Following this would be the visit to the tea gardens.

We have saved the best for the last and that is Char Minar, the most popular attraction in Hyderabad. Guests would be embarking on a visit to this glorious structure in the onset of the evening. Char Minar is a remarkable Mosque structure that was built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. The surroundings of the mosque are always buzzing with lively markets, where guests would can indulge in shopping of traditional items, ornaments and ethnic wear.

Post this, return to your base as the train leaves for Aurangabad.

Day 6

Aurangabad-Ellora caves

Named after the great Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, Aurangabad is an industrial town that is famous as the gateway to the world heritage site of Ellora caves. Deccan Odyssey would be reaching the city by morning fall. After having a sumptuous breakfast onboard, leave for the sightseeing tour of Aurangabad. Under this, you would be visiting the city's popular attractions like Bibi-Ka-Makbara, Daulatabad fort and the 52 gates. Later, embark on the drive to the Ellora caves, 30 km away from the city.

With a total of 34 rock-cut shrines, the Ellora caves are one of the finest examples of cave architecture in India. The collection is of 12 Buddhist, 5 Jain and 17 Hindu cave temples that date back to the 4th and 5th century. However, the most prominent amongst them is the Kailash temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva.

After this visit, head back to Deccan Odyssey for lunch. Evening are meant to be spent at leisure. Enjoy exotic cocktails onboard as the train heads to Jalgaon.

Day 7

Ajanta Caves

Deccan Odyssey would be making its stoppage at the Jalgaon station in the early hours of the day. After having breakfast on board, embark on the drive to the very popular Ajanta caves.

UNESCO renowned world heritage site of Ajanta caves are a group of 30 rock-cut Buddhist shrines. These caves are known for exotic sculptures and paintings of Buddhist religious art, which are intricately carved on their walls.

Post this, guests would be heading back to Deccan Odyssey for lunch. Next in the schedule would be a trip to the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. In the evening, guests would be exploring the nearby villages. After which you would be returning back to the luxuries of Deccan Odyssey as it makes its return journey to Mumbai.

Day 8

Mumbai (Departure)

This brings the end of our wonderful Deccan tour. Guests would be bidding farewell to the luxurious Deccan Odyssey at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai.

Deccan Odyssey embarks on its journey across the heart of Deccan region each Wednesday from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai. Select the date of journey which suits your travel requirement the most from the list of all journeys scheduled for the year 2017-18. Journey run throughout the year except the months of May-July and include all table d'hôte meals, service and off train excursions.

Child Policy

  • Deccan Odyssey does accommodate children but we ask parents to be mindful of the sophisticated adult atmosphere we endeavor to maintain. One child up to 5 years of age shall be allowed free of cost in the Deluxe Cabin, subject to sharing of double bed with parents. This is subject to availability of double bed at the time of booking.
  • For families, with a child between 6-12 years of age, or, with two children with one child below 5 years and another between 6-12 years, we recommend the Presidential Suite which has a double bed in the bedroom and can be shared with a child below 5 years and a sofa cum bed in the living room which can accommodate the older child. In this case, the child/children will be accommodated free of cost.
  • In case of two children between 6-12 years of age travelling with their parents, you will have to take 2 cabins. The first child pays 25% of the adult fare and the second child will have to pay 50% of the adult fare. One of the parents will have to be present with the child / children in the cabin.
  • Please note that we do not have the facility for interconnecting cabins.
  • All applicable taxes will be charged extra.

Booking Policies

  • You are required to pay 20% of ticket value at the time of booking confirmation.
  • Rest 80% of the ticket value is to be paid 45 days before departure.

Cancellation Policy

  • Any cancellation must be advised immediately by Email and subsequently confirmed by letter to the Central Reservation Division
  • If the cancellation is made 60 days prior to departure, no cancellation charges.
  • 20% of ticket value 45-59 days prior to departure.
  • 50% of ticket value 30-44 days prior to departure.
  • 100% ticket value will be retained, if cancelled 29 days prior to commencement of Train journey.
